During this year’s Australian Fashion Week at Sydney’s iconic Carriageworks, we glimpsed the creative minds behind both emerging and established designers within Australia’s fashion industry. The runways featured everything from daring micro shorts to intricate embellishments, sheer fabrics and striking colour palettes. Here’s a closer look at the standout trends from Australian Fashion Week 2024.

Sheer Fabrication: Ethereal Elegance

Sheer fabrics brought an ethereal quality to every runway this fashion week. Designers from Albus Lumen, Acler, Anna Quan to Karla Spetic and PE Nation all played with transparency, pairing sheer materials with solid pieces to create depth and texture. Sheer skirts dominated the runway, paired back with solid tops and outerwear. The use of sheer fabrics wasn’t limited to delicate pastels; bold hues and dark tones also made a strong impact, proving that this trend can be as versatile as it is beautiful.

Micro Shorts: A Bold Statement

Micro shorts made a triumphant return to the runway, proving that sometimes less is more. Designers such as Carla Zampatti, Victoria & Woods and P.E Nation embraced this daring trend, offering a variety of interpretations that ranged from sporty to chic. The key to pulling off this look is confidence and an eye for balance—think statement tops or outerwear pieces to complement the brevity of the shorts.

Embellishments: Glamour in the Details

This season, embellishments were all about opulence and intricacy.  Romance Was Born elevated the ethereal essence across its collection through intricate detailing. Albus Lumen elevated its minimalistic designs with pearl and crystal embellishments, adding a touch of luxury to every piece. Mastani’s event wear sparkled under the lights, while Blanca’s daytime wear was elevated with subtle yet stunning adornments.

The Power of Red and Blue

The colour palette at Sydney Fashion Week was dominated by two bold and powerful hues: Vibrant Red and Cornflour Blue.

Vibrant Red

Vibrant red, a standout in last year’s ‘spring’ color palette, gained momentum thanks to fashion influencers like Sofia Richie. This color appears to have solidified its presence, making a strong impression both on and off the runway during this year’s fashion week. It was frequently spotted in head-to-toe monochrome looks or as a striking accent.

Cornflour Blue

Cornflour Blue also made a notable appearance, offering a calming yet powerful presence across many runways. It was featured in collections by Bec + Bridge, Carla Zampatti, and Mastani. With its blend of sophistication and playfulness, Cornflour Blue emerges as a colour to watch in the seasons ahead.
